Old Scammell Trucks

Scammell of Watford, England, also supplied many of its trucks to the British Army. The Scammell Explorer 6x6 was a developed version of the 6x4 Pioneer of World War II fame. The Explorer saw service in such conflicts as the Korean War. This one is taking part in a cross-country truck trial in France.

The Scammell Pioneer

Scammell

This company, based in Watford, England, was formed in 1922 to build tractor and semi-trailer combinations. Early production was of a six-wheeler with chain drive and solid tyres that could carry 7.5 tons. The 100-tonner of 1929 was an example of this.

It was a truck capable of carrying railway locomotives and built for Marston’s Road Services Limited. Originally, it was equipped with a four cylinder gasoline engine but this was replaced in the early Thirties by a Gardner diesel that made it necessary for the chassis to be lengthened.

The truck was complex, its front suspension having semi elliptic springs while its rear system was made of rocking beams. Transmission was four-speed and final- drive a combination of both prop shaft and chains through a counter shaft differential. The company experimented with heavy trucks capable of crossing difficult terrain and resulted in the Pioneer which became one of World War I’s most famous British trucks.

The Pioneer was built in semi-trailer guise for the transport of tanks, as a heavy recovery truck and a heavy artillery tractor. The Pioneer was powered by a 102-bhp diesel engine and featured a 6x4 six-speed transmission and air assisted brakes.

The Explorer, a 6x6 version of the truck was built in the Fifties as were Constructors, Contractors and Himalayans. Scammell also made an articulated tractor cab known as the Handyman and an eight-wheeler variant, the Routeman.

Another side to Scammell’s heavy vehicle business was that it was one of the few truck manufacturers to build vehicles especially for fairground operators, one such being the Showtrac. This tractor unit had a Gardner six cylinder diesel 102-bhp engine and a six-speed constant mesh gearbox.
